📋Step-by-Step Guide

Enroll in National Health Insurance (国民健康保険)

Visit your local city hall within 14 days of arrival or after losing company insurance. You'll need your residence card, passport, and My Number.

💡 小贴士: If you have company-sponsored health insurance (社会保険), you don't need to enroll in National Health Insurance.

Apply for premium exemption if applicable

Low-income residents can apply for partial or full exemption of National Pension premiums. Apply at your city hall with proof of income (or lack thereof).

Enroll in National Pension (国民年金)

Most foreign residents working in Japan are required to contribute to the pension system. Your employer handles this if you have company insurance.

Receive your Health Insurance Card (保険証)

Your health insurance card is mailed within 1-2 weeks. Present it at hospitals to receive the standard 30% copay rate.

Track your pension contributions (年金記録)

Use "ねんきんネット" (Nenkin Net) online to check your pension records and estimate your future benefits.
