📋Step-by-Step Guide

1

Choose a foreigner-friendly bank

Sony Bank and 住信SBIネット銀行 accept foreign nationals within a few months of arrival. Japan Post Bank (ゆうちょ) accepts foreigners but requires longer residence history for some nationalities.

💡 Tip: Online banks like Sony Bank have English support and are often easier to open as a foreigner.
2

Prepare your documents

Gather your residence card, passport, and proof of address (住民票 or utility bill). Some banks also require a My Number card or notification letter.

3

Apply online or visit a branch

Most major banks now offer online applications. For in-person visits, bring all documents. The process typically takes 30–60 minutes.

4

Wait for your bank card and passbook

Your bank card (キャッシュカード) will be mailed to your registered address within 1–2 weeks. Some banks issue a passbook (通帳) as well.

5

Set up Internet banking

Register for online banking to manage transfers, view balances, and set up automatic payments for utilities and insurance.

💡Helpful Tips

  • Sony Bank and 住信SBI accept foreigners with residence cards and offer English support.
  • Opening an account early is crucial — many employers require a Japanese bank account for salary payments.
  • Japan Post Bank (ゆうちょ銀行) branches are everywhere and often more accessible for new arrivals.
