⚠️Warning

  • The tax filing deadline is March 15 — missing it results in penalties.
  • Foreign income must be declared if you are a resident for tax purposes.

📋Step-by-Step Guide

1

Determine if you need to file

If your employer handles year-end adjustment (年末調整), you may not need to file separately. You must file if you have multiple income sources, income over ¥20M, or freelance/side income over ¥200,000.

2

Understand your resident status for tax

Residents in Japan for 1+ year are taxed on worldwide income. Non-residents (less than 1 year) are only taxed on Japan-sourced income.

💡 Tip: Tax treaties exist with many countries — check if your country has one with Japan to avoid double taxation.
3

Gather your documents

Collect income statements (源泉徴収票), receipts for deductible expenses (medical costs, charitable donations), and your My Number.

4

File using e-Tax or at the Tax Office

Filing period: February 16 – March 15. Use the National Tax Agency's e-Tax portal (English available) or visit your local tax office.

💡 Tip: freee and other tax software can simplify the process with English support.
5

Pay any additional tax or receive a refund

If you overpaid through withholding, you'll receive a refund. Additional tax owed must be paid by the March 15 deadline.

💡Helpful Tips

  • Japan has tax treaties with over 70 countries — check to avoid double taxation.
  • The Furusato Nozei (hometown tax) system allows you to donate to municipalities and claim deductions.
  • Medical expenses over ¥100,000/year are deductible.
  • Use freee or yayoi cloud software for easier filing with English support.
